Born in the north of France, Franck Ribéry started his professional career in Metz, before going to Galatasaray.
Joining Olympique de Marseille for the 2005-06 season, he quickly became the key man of the team.
His stunning acceleration, his involvement into the game, his opportunist sense and his courage on the pitch proved he definitely deserved his nickname of Ferraribery.
After saving his club's season, he was selected by the French national team manager Raymond Domenech to take part in the FIFA World Cup 2006.
Lacking confidence at the beginning of the competition, he revealed all his talent in the second round where he scored the first French goal, and where his partnership with Zinedine Zidane permitted Les Bleus to win 3-1 against Spain.
When he was two years-old, Franck had a terrible car accident which left scars on his face (he went through the windscreen).
'Scarface' quickly became the French team's mascot, and darling of the French nation.
Franck is married to a Muslim woman and converted himself, having been brought up a Catholic.
