Kick-Off: 21:00 Local (20:00 BST) Assistant referees: Wálter Rial (Uruguay) Pablo Fandino (Uruguay) Fourth official: Mark Shield (Australia) Fifth official: Nathan Gibson (Australia) Man of the Match: Lilian Thuram (France) France booked a World Cup final spot against Italy after Zinedine Zidane's first-half penalty earned victory over a disappointing Portugal in Munich. Zidane struck coolly past Ricardo on 33 minutes after Thierry Henry was tripped inside the box by Ricardo Carvalho. Henry saw another shot trickle wide and Franck Ribery forced Ricardo to save. Luis Figo and Deco saw shots saved by Fabien Barthez and Figo nodded over late on, but France stayed in control and thoroughly deserved their win. France have only met Portugal competitively on two previous occasions - both in the semi-finals of the European Championships. In 1984 in Marseilles, France won 3-2 after extra time with Michel Platini scoring the winner in the 119th minute. In 2000 in Brussels, France won 2-1 during extra time with a Golden Goal by Zinedine Zidane in the 117th minute. In both tournaments, France went on to win the trophy - in 1982 against Spain and in 2000 against Italy.

Comments:

Having already announced his retirement, Zinedine Zidane's penalty goal means he will play the last game of his career in the World Cup Final. This was France's 50th World Cup finals match. Louis Saha will miss the World Cup Final after receiving his second yellow card during the knockout stages.

Comments:

This was the second time that Portugal had reached the World Cup semi-finals. In 1966, they were knocked out by winners England at Wembley. This was Portugal's first defeat in 18 competitive matches. Their last competitive defeat came in the Final of Euro 2004 when they lost 0-1 to Greece in Lisbon. This defeat brought to an end coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's record run of 12 consecutive World Cup finals victories.
