PositionMidfielder

After playing in the 1998 World Cup finals for Germany, Dietmar joined Newcastle United for £5.5 million.

After only one season of Tyneside, the defensive midfielder joined Liverpool for a then club record fee of £8million.

Dietmar began his career at Wacker Munich where his father was the coach before signing for Bayern Munich in 1989.

He made his debut two years later and remained a permanent fixture in the team making over 100 appearances and winning two Bundesliga titles, a German Cup and a UEFA Cup while at the club.

He made his international debut in November 1997 against South Africa.

Dietmar suffered an injury that restricted his performances in his first season at Liverpool but became a key figure in Gerard Houllier's revolution at the club.

On the international stage, he survived the fall out following Germany's ignominious exit from Euro 2000 and was the architect of his team's early revenge against England in the World Cup qualifying game at Wembley.

He scored the only goal with a quickly taken free kick that caught David Seaman off guard.

This efficient and unspectacular player remained a linchpin in the Germany team for the 2002 World Cup finals and played in the Final defeat by Brazil.

Dietmar signed a new one-year contract with Liverpool in June 2005.

Having already signed a pre-contract agreement with Bolton Wanderers, Dietmar joined Manchester City in July 2006 with a two-year contract. City paid Bolton compensation of £400,000.

His City contract was extended to June 2009 in February 2008.

Dietmar joined Milton keynes Dons as player / coach in May 2010 with a one-year contract.
