Kick-Off: 20:00 Local (12:00 BST) Assistant referees: Leif Lundberg (Sweden) Philip Sharp (England) Fourth official: Hugh Dallas (Scotland) Man of the Match: Ronaldo (Brazil) Both teams played in their seventh final despite never having met in a World Cup match in the tournament's 72-year history. At the end of a tournament filled with shock results, the 2002 World Cup Final was played out in familiar fashion with Brazil lifting the world crown for the fifth time to confirm their place as the most successful country on the game's most prestigious stage. And it was a personal triumph for star striker Ronaldo who banished memories of his controversial anonymous performance in the final in France four years earlier with the two-goal salvo that clinched the trophy in Yokohama. The Inter Milan marksman squandered three first-half chances but he was not to be denied in the 67th minute when his predatory instincts struck after German keeper Oliver Kahn spilled Rivaldo's long-range shot. Twelve minutes later the game was won. This time, Rivaldo's dummy deceived the German rearguard and Ronaldo pounced with a superb side-footed finish. It was left to captain Cafu (playing in his record third consecutive final) to lift the famous golden trophy high into the Japanese sky as coach Luiz Felipe Scholari's team - written off before the tournament started - proved to be worthy winners.
