Comments:

Ecuador progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup finals for the first time with this win. They had won only one finals game before this tournament, and this is their biggest-ever World Cup finals victory. It is also the first time they've won consecutive matches and kept consecutive clean sheets in the the World Cup finals. Agustin Delgado extends his record to three goals as Ecuador's leading scorer in the World Cup finals.

Comments:

This defeat meant Costa Rica cannot progress to the knockout stages. Costa Rica have still only beaten Edcuador once in nine 'A' international meetings. The only victory came in their first-ever meeting in San Jose on 27 May 1992.
