Costa Rica are the third most successful CONCACAF nation and have qualified for three World Cup finals. On their debut appearance at the competition in 1990 they progressed from the group stage making it to the last sixteen.

Although Costa Rica have never won the CONCACAF Gold Cup, they did win the previous version of the competition, the CONCACAF championships, three times.

The national team is often invited to play in the Copa America and have done so on four occasions.

Paulo Wanchope is perhaps one of the most famous names to have represented Costa Rica. The forward, who plied his trade in England for most of his career, scored 45 international goals.
