Despite a return to the basement after eight years, their cherished Bloomfield Road reduced to a two-sided stadium and being under the cosh for much of the game, spirited Blackpool clinched an opening day win with two late goals. Having recovered from the injury that sidelined him since last October, Brett Ormerod opened the Tangerine's 2000-01 account with a splendid curling shot from the left corner of the box, only for the Tigers to immediately pull level when Michael Edwards scrambled the ball home from close range. Another double quickfire salvo proved conclusive as a diving header from John Murphy and cool finish on the break from Paul Simpson won the day for Steve McMahon's men.
