FIFA Confederations Cup, 2001

Upcoming World Cup co-hosts Japan and South Korea hosted the tournament in 2001. For the first time the tournament was used as a warm up for the World Cup.

Reigning European and world champions France progressed as top of their group despite being upset 1 - 0 by Australia.

An under strength Brazil still managed to qualify from the group coming in second after hosts Japan.

Japan, inspired by Nakata, and made it through to the final. His long range deflected free-kick ensured victory against Australia.

France were clear favourites for the final after eliminating Brazil. France triumphed meaning they had a clean sweep of titles - World, European and Intercontinental.
