FIFA Confederations Cup, 1997

In 1997, hosted again by Saudi Arabia, the tournament was known as the FIFA Confederations Cup for the first time.

Romario and Ronaldo formed a formidable frontline for the Brazilians who were pre-tournament favourites. They qualified from group A as winners along with Australia.

Uruguay won group B. Czech Republic qualified in second thanks to a convincing win against UAE in which Vladimír Šmicer scored a hat-trick.

Harry Kewell's golden goal against Uruguay secured a place in the final for the Australians. As expected Brazil defeated Czech Republic in the other semi.

Ronaldo and Romario scored a hat-trick each as Brazil thrashed Australia 6 - 0 in the final.
