CONCACAF Gold Cup, 2005

USA went back to independently hosting the tournament in 2005. The format changed so that the first round would be made up of three groups. The top two in each group would qualify as well as the best two teams finishing third.

Guest nations South Africa and Colombia, like some of the other countries, participated with under strength squads. Some of the matches which were scheduled to take place in Miami had to be delayed due to a hurricane.

Panama were the surprise package of the tournament as they reached the final. They were inspired by star man Luis Tejada who was named player of the tournament. The final went to penalties as both sides failed to score in 120 minutes of play. The Americans held their nerve as they converted three spot kicks to Panama's one.
