The Panama national football team played their first international in 1937 against Mexico. On that occasion they managed a 2 - 2 draw.

Panama went on to win the 1951 CCCF Championship and also finish runners up in the 2005 Gold Cup.

World Cup 1978 was the first World Cup for which Panama attempted qualification. Since then they have entered every competition but are yet to appear at the finals.

Football has suffered from a lack of popularity in Panama. The sport is far behind the likes of baseball and basketball.
