Nigeria emerged as a force of African football in the 1990s. They won the African Nations Cup in 1994 and reached the second rounds at the 1994 and 1998 World Cups. Jay-Jay Okocha was perhaps the most influential player of this period. The attacking midfielder was known for his skill and flair.

At USA 1994 Nigeria were on the verge of progressing to the quarter final until they were denied by a late comeback from Italy.

Four years on in France the Super Eagles again qualified for the second round, at top of their group. The first stage had brought a famous 3 - 2 victory for Nigeria against Spain. A dispute over money unsettled the camp and they were knocked out by Denmark in the next round.

In 2013 Nigeria claimed their third African Nations Cup victory as they defeated Burkino Faso 1 - 0 in the final.
