El Salvador have a long international footballing history. Their first match came in 1921 when they took part in the Independence Centenary Games.

El Salvador's national football team have qualified for the World Cup on two occasions. On both occasions, in 1970 and 1982, they failed to make it past the group stage.

On two occasions "La Selecta" have been runners up at the CONCACAF Championships. In 1963 and 1981 they lost out to Costa Rica and Honduras respectively.

Ra?l D?az Arce is the country's leading all-time goalscorer. During his international career, the forward managed over a goal every two games. He notched 39 goals in 68 caps.
