Zelijko is a powerful central defender who is strong in the tackle and particularly effective as a man marker. He enjoyed success as a member of the Olimpija Ljubljana team that dominated the domestic scene in the early 1990s, before moving to Zeleznicar Ljubljana in the 1994-1995 season. He moved to Maribor in 1995 and won two championship medals with them. Zelijko won his first cap against Austria in March 1997 while at Maribor before moving on to play in Austria for LASK Linz in 1998. Early in 2001 he elected to join J-League outfit JEF United on a three-year contract, linking up with former national coach Zdenko Verdenik. For the national team he has made the right back berth his own.
