He burst onto the international scene shortly before the 2002 World Cup finals but developed into the first choice sweeper. Umit began his career at Genclerbirlgi in 1997 and had three seasons at the club before a dispute with the board led him to spend most of the 2000-01 season on loan at Bursaspor. He secured a permanent move to Fernebahce in 2001 for £ 700,000 and his performances bought him into the reckoning for the matches in qualification. He made his debut in March 2001 against Macedonia and has been first choice since midway through qualification. A composed intelligent centre half with excellent distribution skills.
