Having watched the first three days of the 2002 World Cup finals at home on TV, the attacking midfielder received the late call up from coach Luiz Filipe Scholari after Emerson dislocated his shoulder less than 24 hours before Brazil's opening match against Turkey.
The Brazilian captain was playing in goal in a practice match when he fell awkwardly.
Ricardinho began his professional career at the age of 17 with Parana before moving to France with Bordeaux in 1997.
He returned to Brazil two years later when he joined Corinthians.
Part of the team that won the FIFA World Club Championship in January 2000, more recently he helped Corinthians win the Copa Brazil and Rio-Sao Paulo tournaments under Carlos Alberto Parreira, the national coach when Brazil won the 1994 World Cup.
He was selected in the squad for the 1998 tournament but spent the entire event on the substitutes' bench.
Prior to the finals, his only international appearances were in the qualifying games against Colombia, Chile and Peru. During the 2002 World Cup finals, he made sub appearances against China, Costa Rica and Belgium.
NB This Ricardinho should not be confused with fellow Brazilian international Ricardinho Santos of Cruzeiro.
Ricardinho joined Middlesbrough in February 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
