Although seen as back up to the main strikers, Hakan - who can play all across the front line - was a starter in Turkey's opening 2002 World Cup finals game against Brazil.
He began his club career at Ankaragucu before joining Galatasaray in 1998. He was suspended for six months after a positive drugs test in 1999 but forced his way back into contention making his international debut in February 2001 and has been a regular ever since. He has been in good club form.
Hasan scored his first international goal in Turkey's opening game in the Far East against Brazil. It was Turkey's first goal in the World Cup finals since 1954 and his second (in the 3-0 defeat of China) ensured that they would qualify for the second phase for the first time. Except for the 3rd / 4th place Play-Off, he played in all of Turkey's games in the 2002 World Cup finals.
