Liverpool – Champions League chances 2017/18 season

Liverpool look a revitalized team this season with the lethal combination of Salah, Mane and Firmino. They have virtually secured a top four finish in the Premier league as they continue to pick up points. They are currently sitting in third behind the two Manchester clubs with 60 points from their 30 games played.  So what are the chances of Liverpool winning Europe’s premier competition this season?

Liverpool are around 9/1 to win the competition behind the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona. However it is clear no team will want to draw the previous competition winners as when on form they can beat any team as shown in the recent victory over runaway Premier league leaders Manchester City.

They qualified from Group E with 12 points from their six games. This was an unbeaten run of three victories and three draws as they topped the group ahead of Sevilla – in the process finishing with a goal difference of plus 17 having scored an incredible 23 goals. This further backs up just why they are currently one of the most dangerous attacking teams in Europe.

Their first game of the current campaign was a well earned 2-2 draw against Sevilla. They dominated the game throughout but continued to miss clear opportunities and were punished late on. It was a case of the same as they drew 1-1 against Spartak Moscow following again dominating much of the contest.  Fans were beginning to get frustrated with the team not getting these much needed victories.

Liverpool finally turned it around as they destroyed minnows Maribor by 7 goals to nil. This performance was again headed by Salah scoring a brace. Maribor were then welcomed to Anfield and Liverpool dominated again – finishing the game as 3-0 winners.

Liverpool’s next real test was against Sevilla as they went 3-0 up inside just 22 minutes before capitulating to a disappointing 3-3 draw. This again showed the frailty Liverpool have continued to show at the back in recent years. The reds now were in search of much needed points to enable them to qualify to the knockout stage of the competition. They again faced struggling Spartak Moscow but completely took them apart from the opening whistle finishing as 7-0 winners. This also meant that they were guaranteed to top the group and therefore get an easier passage through the competition.

Liverpool were drawn against Portuguese champions Porto but secured qualification in the first leg as the front three again tore their opponents apart. This was a faultless performance from Liverpool as they looked like scoring in every attack as Mane starred with a hat trick. The reds then followed this up with a very professional performance in neutralizing Porto to a goalless draw at Anfield.

Liverpool now enters the latter end of the competition as they look to replicate their previous success in the competition. If they continue to play free flowing football they are dangerous for any side and could just prove shock winners of the competition this season. There is another key event coming to Liverpool in the next month and that is the inaugural running of the Grand National. It is looking as competitive as ever and you can check out the latest best odds at the Grand National meeting here.
