Denmark SuperLiga season preview

The 2017-18 Danish SuperLiga season gets underway on July 14 with a host of teams hoping to challenge FC Copenhagen’s recent dominance.

Stale Solbakken’s side have won the league and cup double for the last two seasons and they are big favourites for more success next term.

Brondby and FC Midtjylland are amongst the clubs who will bid to topple Copenhagen and LeoVegas Denmark has all the odds ahead of the new campaign.

Copenhagen lost just twice in the league last season as they sauntered to the title a massive 22 points in front of Brondby, with Lyngby a further four points adrift.

Striker Federico Santander topped the club’s scoring charts last term and will be out for more next season, but forward partner Andreas Cornelius has joined Serie A side Atalanta.

Pieros Sotiriou has been signed as Cornelius’ replacement from APOEL Nicosia having scored 26 goals in all competitions for the Cypriot outfit last year.

Centre-Back Michael Luftner has also joined the club from Czech side Slavia Prague, while full-back Pierre Bengtsson has completed a move from the Bundesliga’s FSV Mainz 05.

Bengtsson replaces Ludwig Augustinsson who has been transferred to Werder Bremen in Germany.

Solbakken could be forced to look for more defensive recruits should Mathias Jorgensen complete his expected move to Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town.

Brondby’s hopes of a first title since 2005 rest firmly on the shoulders of Finnish striker Teemu Pukki.

The 27-year-old scored 29 goals last season and he will be relied on for more goals during the new campaign.

Midfielder Hany Mukhtar has joined the club on a permanent basis after a successful season on loan from Benfica, while FSV Mainz 05’s Besar Halimi will hope to make a similar impact during his loan deal.

FC Midtjylland have had a busy summer in the transfer market as they bid to shape a squad to challenge Copenhagen.

Experienced goalie Jesper Hansen has joined the club from Lyngby BK, while winger Gustav Wikheim has moved to Denmark from Belgian side KAA Gent.

Attacking midfielder Bozhidar Kraev has also been added from Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia and promising striker Alexander Sorloth has moved from Dutch side FC Groningen.

The 2016/17 First Division champions Hobro IK have returned to the top flight after a one year absence, and they will hope to make their mark alongside fellow new-boys FC Helsingor who are back in the top division for the first time since the 1936–37 season.

Highlights of the opening round of fixtures includes Copenhagen’s game against Aalborg BK on Saturday July 15 and Brondby taking on FC Midtjylland the following day.
