Can Chelsea break the record for the most consecutive Premier League wins?

Currently, the longest winning record in the Premier League belongs to Arsenal who took the title in the 2001/2002 season. To achieve this, they won their final 13 games, winning the League, and then beat Birmingham in the first game of the next season to extend their winning run to 14 games.

Can Chelsea beat this record in 2016/17? Well, given Gary Cahill’s own goal at the Etihad last Saturday, the answer looked like a resounding no. Luckily a life line was thrown to them in the form of Diego Costa, Willian and Eden Hazard as they came back to win 3-1.

However, six wins away from equaling the record, Conte and his men have their work cut out. The fixtures over the festive period will offer a tough workload for the players but Chelsea should be looking to take maximum points from their next three home games. West Brom, Stoke and Bournemouth are all set to visit Stamford Bridge during December but the festive crowd should give Chelsea that much needed edge.

On the road, The Blues face Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Spurs. The former two are both flirting with relegation and Spurs is undoubtedly the toughest test on that list. The Lilywhites are also progressing well this season having punished a lack lustre Swansea 5-0 at White Hart Lane last weekend. They currently sit in fifth place and have just one defeat to their name.

If you are considering a punt on their chances, Chelsea currently sit at 11/1 to equal the record of 14 straight wins. Bookies and tipsters are also optimistic with offers including the Enhanced Bets £30 PP promotion available for the 20/1 odds of surpassing 15 consecutive games. Interestingly, the game to break the record may be away to champions Leicester, two weeks into the new year.

Chelsea are currently top of the league and are three-points clear of second-placed Arsenal who are unbeaten since the opening day of the season. Behind Arsenal by one point is Liverpool who at one point looked to be flying, though their 4-3 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth has thrown a temporary spanner in Jurgen Klopp’s title challenge. The Reds were 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium but ended up losing the game, just the second time in Premier League history that they’d let a two-goal half-time lead turn into a defeat, with their first coming earlier this year in a 3-2 defeat against Southampton at St.Mary’s.

With Pep Guardiola’s long-awaited arrival in the Premier League, Manchester City were set to be the team to beat this season and got off to a flying start in the Premier League, succeeding in all competitions. However, now, City have just four wins in 14 games which is not the form of a team who should be competing at the very top in the league, domestic cups and Europe. Chelsea’s second-half domination of them suggests that The Blues may just have the edge this season, with Aguero and Fernandinho’s red cards set to further hamper City’s title hopes.
