On this day in football history

  • 1950 In a First Division match played on a carpet of at least two inches of snow Derby County beat Sunderland 6-5. The Rams goals came from Lee(4), Morris and McLaren while Sunderland replied through Davis(2), Ford(2) and T. Wright.
  • 1961 Jimmy Greaves marked his debut for Tottenham Hotspur with a hat trick against Blackpool at White Hart Lane. Spurs won 5-1. Greaves had just returned to England after a short spell in Italian football.
  • 1961 Jim Patterson, Queen of the South's centre-forward, scored six goals in his club's 7-1 win over Cowdenbeath in Scottish League Division Two. He played for the club from 1949 until 1962 and scored 201 goals in 362 League games and set the club scoring record for First Division football in the 1956-57 season with 26 goals. He also scored a total of 33 goals in the Scottish League Cup and 17 in the Scottish FA Cup.
