On this day in football history

  • 1871 Football Association proposed that a Challenge Cup be established for competition amongst its members. Fifteen clubs entered for the first Competition in 1871-72 and included Queens Park, the Scottish amateur side.
  • 1885 At a Special General Meeting of the Football Association professionalism in football was legalised. It was, however, a further eight years before a paid player was recognised in Scotland.
  • 1912 FA Council decree that an extra 30 minutes shall be added to the FA Cup Final in case of a draw at 90 minutes.
  • 1966 The last of the Group qualifying matches in the World Cup finals played. At Wembley, England, who brought in Ian Callaghan in place of Paine, beat France 2-0 and so topped Group 1. Roger Hunt scored both goals and the crowd numbered 92,500. West Germany beat Spain 2-1 at Villa Park and won Group 2 on goal average from Argentina, attendance 45,187. Hungary beat Bulgaria 3-1 at Old Trafford and qualified for the quarter-finals in Group 3 which was headed by Portugal, attendance 24,129. In Group 4 Russia won her third game by beating Chile 2-1 before 16,027 spectators at Roker Park.
