The Polish Football Federation was founded on 20 December 1919 in Warsaw.

Poland played their first official match on 18 December 1921 against Hungary in Budapest.

The golden era of Polish football was the mid-seventies when they famously held England to a 1-1 draw at Wembley to qualify for the 1974 World Cup.

They finished third in the tournament held in West Germany with celebrated striker Grzegorz Lato winning the Golden Boot with seven goals.

Poland also enjoyed great success in Germany in 1972 when they won the gold medal in the Olympics in Munich. They also won the silver medal in 1976 in Montreal as well as silver in Barcelona in 1992. Their Olympic success was helped by an amateur squad, familiar to other nations in Eastern Europe during the Iron Curtain period.

Poland qualified for the European Championships for the first time in 2008 and are joint hosts with Ukraine in Euro 2012.
