From 1945 to 1991, the Soviet Republic of Macedonia (SR Macedonia) played mostly exhibition games against other Yugoslavian republics as they were ineligible to play in any officially sanctioned fixtures.

Independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 allowed the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYR Macedonia) to become a member of FIFA and UEFA. Their first game was a friendly against Slovenia on 13 October 1993.

Following United Nations mediation, an historical dispute with Greece was resolved and, with effect from 15 February 2019, the name of North Macedonia was adopted.

Having made his debut in June 2001, Goran Pandev became the first player to win 100 caps for the country in a UEFA European Championship qualifier against Latvia on 21 March 2019.

With a goal from Pandev clinching a play-off win in Georgia on 12 November 2020, Macedonia qualified for their first-ever major tournament as they reached the following summer’s UEFA European Championship.

Home games are usually played at the Toše Proeski Arena in Skopje.
