The Honduran national football team has qualified for the World Cup finals on two occasions. The first came in 1982 and the second in 2010. Both times they were eliminated at the group stage.

Honduras have competed in South America's Copa America on one occasion. In the tournament they provided a shock knocking Brazil out in the semi-finals.

After Honduras were eliminated from World Cup 1970 qualification by El Salvador, the two nations were briefly engaged in the Football War

In recent times, Honduran players have made their mark in some major European leagues such as Wilson Palacios and Maynor Figeroa in the English Premier League.
