Organised association football soon spread to the Czech lands and the new sport quickly took hold in Prague. Slavia Prague, the city’s first club, was founded in 1892.
The Czech Football Association was founded in 1901 and, six years later, gained membership to FIFA.
Bohemia (the present day Czech Republic) played seven matches between 1903 and 1908. Czechoslovakia became a sovereign state and existed from October 1918 when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After the peaceful separation of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993, the Republic’s national team has deservedly established an outstanding reputation.
Their debut international competition was at the Euro 1996 in England where they finished as worthy runners-up.
However, the Czech Republic has only featured in one World Cup (the 2006 tournament in Germany).
They were knocked in the group stages, a fate they also suffered at Euro 2008.| Games won: | 120 |
