The 150th league meeting between Manchester United and Chelsea, and their 50th encounter in the Premier League, saw the title-chasing Blues fail to keep a clean sheet in ten consecutive games in the Premier League for the first time since December 1996.
Chelsea’s defeat at Old Trafford means their advantage over Tottenham Hotspur is down to four points after Spurs extended their current outstanding run of form to seven consecutive league wins for the first time since May 1967 and 12 consecutive home league wins within a top division season for the first time in their history.
Manchester City maintained their challenge for a Champions League place as their terrific performances on the road continued at Southampton. Pep Guardiola’s charges have won 11 away league games so far in this season. Their club record is 12 away wins in League Division 1 in 2001-02 (played 23).
Liverpool’s exemplary record against the leading teams means, with nine wins in 14 games, they will remain unbeaten in games against the other current top eight teams in this season. Their win at The Hawthorns also meant that West Bromwich Albion have failed to score in four consecutive league games for the first time since April 2003.
Romelu Lukaku’s own amazing current form continued as he became the first player to score in nine consecutive home games for Everton since Dixie Dean in 1934. The Toffees have won eight consecutive home league games for the first time since April 1990 in League Division One.
Alexis Sánchez’s opener at Middlesbrough was Arsenal’s 3,000th goal in away league games. Only Manchester United with 3,226 have scored more. The Gunners also avoided losing lose five consecutive away games in the top division for the first time since December 1984.
Leicester City seemed set to continue their recent revival when Robert Huth’s early opener became the 200th goal that Crystal Palace had conceded at Selhurst Park in the Premier League. It was the tenth time that the Foxes had scored the opening goal in a league game so far in this season but the first that they have failed to go on and win.
Stoke City scored three splendid goals in their win against Hull City. The second by Peter Crouch was the Potters’ 6,000th goal in their 4,465 league games. They became the 37th club to reach this milestone.
Sunderland are almost certain to be returning to the Championship after a ten-year absence but there was some cheer for the Stadium of Light faithful with Wahbi Khazri scoring the Black Cats’ first goal in the Premier League for 701 minutes (11 hours and 41 minutes) since their win at Crystal Palace on 4 February.
Could Swansea City be joining them in the Championship’s 2017-18 line-up? The Swans have lost five of their last six Premier League games, scored only one goal in the last five and lost six consecutive away games in the Premier League for the first time.
And finally, there were very mixed emotions for two former members of the Premier League in League One. Sheffield United became the fourth team to have won each of England’s four top divisions after Burnley, Preston North End and Wolverhampton Wanderers by clinching their first title since 1982 while crisis club Coventry City, sadly, return to the fourth tier for the first time since 1959.
