Gottskalksson immediately established himself as first-choice goalkeeper for Brentford in 2000-01 after signing from Hibernian during the 2000 summer break. An excellent shot stopper his assured performances inspired confidence in the Bees' defence and he made early-season penalty saves against Wycombe Wanderers and Notts County.
He has also been known to join the attack for late corners when the situation requires and almost scored against Swindon Town in April when he headed narrowly over the bar.
He won a runners-up medal in the LDV Vans Trophy after appearing for Brentford in the final against Port Vale.
Gottskalksson went on the Griffin Park transfer list in February 2002 before being forced to retire with a shoulder injury in November 2002.
He recovered sufficiently to join Torquay United in September 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
