Malessa joined Bristol City from Southampton's juniors. He had few opportunities to demonstrate his ability in goal for City in 2000-01 although he proved an effective deputy for Steve Phillips when called upon. He made his senior debut in the Worthington Cup first round first leg tie against Brentford and went on to feature twice more during the season. He was a regular in the reserve team where he showed himself to be a fine shot stopper. Malessa was out of contract in the summer when he was released by City. After a brief spell at Oxford, he joined Reading on non-contract terms before another short stop at Shrewsbury Town.
