Tony Caig began the 2000-01 season as first-choice Blackpool keeper before losing his place to Phil Barnes in September.
He later moved to Premiership club Charlton Athletic where he linked up once again with Mervyn Day his former manager at Carlisle United.
Although third-choice, he made his Premiership debut as a half-time replacement for the injured Dean Kiely against Derby County at The Valley when he made several fine saves and kept a clean sheet.
He appeared to have done enough to retain his place in the team but the following week he was replaced by Sasa Ilic and did not feature again for the Addicks.
Tony's contract at Newcastle United was extended to June 2005 in July 2004.
