The runner-up to both the World Footballer of the Year and European Footballer of the Year in 2003 began his career for junior clubs Ulis, Palaiseau, Vitry and Clairefontaine before signing for AS Monaco in 1994 were he teamed up with David Trezeguet, Nicolas Anelka and future Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

He moved to Juventus but after a torrid time joined his old Monaco coach at Arsenal in August 1999.

Thierry made his international debut in October 1997 against South Africa and was part of the squad that won the World Cup in France in 1998.

Having already won the UEFA Youth Championship in 1996, he has since enjoyed international success at Euro 2000, the Confederations Cup in 2001 and has exceeded the 50 full caps mark.

A striker with lightning pace he also possesses fantastic skill, a wide shooting range and the ability to conjure chances from nothing.

Despite playing mostly in a central role he often pulls out onto the flanks where his speed enables him to pass opposition full backs with ease.

Theirry's contract at Arsenal was extended to June 2010 in May 2006.

Thierry's goal against South Korea on 18 June 2006 was the first by France in the World Cup finals since they beat Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 Final in Paris.

It meant they avoided equalling Bolivia's competition record of five consecutive World Cup finals games without a goal.

He then scored the second goal in a 2-0 Group G win against Togo that put France through to the Round of 16, then the only goal of the quarter-final as they eliminated holders Brazil in a re-match of the 1998 Final.
