Signed from Port Vale during the summer, Stewart quickly settled into his role as a midfield dynamo for Rotherham United in 2000-01.
He impressed with his ability to win the ball and a willingness to push forward while he netted a crucial goal for the Millers to earn victory at Northampton Town when the team produced a tremendous performance after playing for most of the game with ten men. His influence on the team was such that he was sorely missed whenever absent.
Stewart joined Brentford in February 2004 with a contract to June 2006 but was made available for transfer in May 2005.
