Steven was a surprise call up into South Africa's 2002 World Cup squad as he hadn't played a full international yet.
He started as a pupil at the South African Soccer School of Excellence and had attracted interest from the Kaizer Chiefs.
He signed for Ajax Cape Town after a trial with Ajax in Holland as he did not want too leave home.
He was voted talent of the year in South Africa and was finally persuaded to move to Holland in January 2001.
After a loan spell, Steven joined Everton in July 2008 with a contract to June 2011.
He joined Tottenham Hotspur in January 2011 with a contract to June 2015.
