Newcastle United's youngest-ever debutant when he made his bow against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the age of 16 years 223 days, this early experience saw Steve progress to comfortably retain his position in Kevin Keegan's star-studded team.

A brilliant right-back who could also be relied upon in other defensive and midfield positions.

Steve joined Everton in the summer of 2000, and immediately established himself as one of the club's most consistent players, both in terms of form and fitness.

Whether used as an adventurous wing back, more restrained full back or out-and-out centre half, Steve's versatility was matched by his performances throughout a difficult Everton campaign.

His high point was undoubtedly a dramatic injury-time FA Cup winner at Watford but, throughout the season, Steve lent his support to Everton attacks and was responsible for directly creating a large proportion of the side's goals.

Defensively, he also proved solid, and an early season aberration apart at home to Ipswich Town, he enjoyed a sound first season at Goodison.

Steve joined West Bromwich Albion in July 2005 with a three-year contract.
