McIlhargey announced his retirement in May 2004 but was retained by Morecambe as goalkeeping coach.
Due to circumstances leading to a shortage of senior keeping options, McIlhargey was drafted on to the Shrimps' bench for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with Grimsby Town in February 2008.
