A product of the Bournemouth youth system, Steve forced his way into the first team while still a trainee, he made his first team debut in April 1999 against Macclesfield Town.

He signed professional forms in July 1999.

After appearing as a substitute in the opening match of the 1999-2000 season, he moved to Portsmouth for £250,000 in August 1999.

He failed to make the first team and was loaned to Exeter City for the last two months of the season.

He returned but having failed to make much headway at Portsmouth, Steve looked to be on his way from the club when he went to Plymouth Argyle for a trial spell early in 2001.

However, new Pompey boss Graham Rix saw some potential in the young striker and brought him in for some crucial games towards the end of the 2000-01 season.

Steve scored regularly in the reserves and netted for the first time at senior level with a brilliant solo effort that proved to be the winner against Stockport County in March 2001.

He missed the start of the 2001-02 season with a back injury but could not force his way into the first team, and was loaned out to Sheffield United towards the end of the season.

Portsmouth made him available for transfer in the summer of 2002.

Strong, fast and determined, Steve joined Queens Park Rangers on a three month loan at the start of 2002-03 season but was recalled by Pompey within a fortnight.

Steve re-joined AFC Bournemouth in July 2010 - when his half-brother Eddie Howe was the manager - with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2012 in May 2011.

He announced his retirement in September 2011 due to an ankle injury.
