Having joined Wolves for a substantial fee during the close season Robert struggled to make an impact in the early games last term, despite applying plenty of effort. He scored in the Worthington Cup tie at Oxford and another two against Grimsby in the same competition but was hampered by a mystery injury that was later diagnosed as a rare muscle problem that was causing him to suffer cramp-like symptoms. He returned briefly to the squad in December but did not feature at all for the first team after Christmas.
Robert joined Grimsby Town in August 2002 on a four-month contract. He went on to join Lincolnshire rivals Scunthorpe United on non-contract terms in February 2003 before announcing his retirement from senior football in July 2003.
