Burgess began the 2000-01 campaign with Dr Martens Premier Division outfit Worcester City but received few early season opportunities and moved on to neighbours Bromsgrove Rovers at the end of August. His performances soon attracted the attention of Football League scouts and after a proposed move to Northampton Town fell through he signed for Port Vale in March. A small and nippy striker, he showed plenty of promise in the reserves, scoring a hat-trick in the game at Oldham Athletic, and made his Football League debut when coming off the subs' bench in the closing stages of the game at Millwall.
