Before playing for England at youth levels, Rhys Murphy represented the Republic of Ireland at under-15 level. After an approach from Irish under-21 head coach Noel King in 2011, he switched his allegiance back to the country of his grandfather.
Rhys joined Oldham Athletic in February 2015 with a contract to June 2017.
He joined Gillingham in January 2018 with a contract to June 2018.
