One of the young hopefuls in the French squad, Philippe is a central defender who can also play as sweeper.
Powerful in the air and with good technical skills, he first came to prominence with Monaco where made his senior debut in October 1997 and was a member of the team that won the French League title in 1999-2000.
He subsequently joined Barcelona in the 2001 close season as the Catalan side sought to strengthen their squad to challenge Real Madrid for domestic supremacy.
A regular in the Under-21s for whom he won 16 caps, Philippe stepped up to win his first full cap against South Africa in October 2000.
His international performances have been restricted by the dominance of Laurent Blanc, Marcel Desailly and Frank LeBoeuf in his position.
