After spending 2005-06 on loan at Chesterfield, Phil joined the Spireites in July 2006 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2010 in June 2008.
He joined Bury in August 2010 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2014 in January 2012.
In May 2013, it was announced that Phil would miss the entire 2013-14 season after suffering a setback in his recovery from a serious knee injury.
He had not played since being hurt in a game against Preston North End in September 2012 upto announcing his retirement in May 2014.
