Despite approaching the twilight of his career Phil had a fine season with Reading last term and after taking over the captaincy from Darren Caskey he provided some inspirational leadership to his colleagues around him. A tough tackling midfield player he finished runner-up to Martin Butler as the club's 'Player of the Year' and fully deserved the new two-year contract he received. A perfect ambassador on and off the field he found time to help out with coaching at the Royals' Academy in addition to his studies for a degree in sociology with the Open University.
Phil left Reading in February 2003 to become the new manager of Colchester United.
