Full name is: Pedro Miguel Carreiro Resendes.
Pauleta began his career at Estoril in 1995, before moving to Spain to play for Salamanca in 1996.
The team won promotion to the Spanish First Division but he never really settled and was soon snapped up by Deportivo La Coruna for £3.75 million in 1998.
His first team chances were restricted by injury but he was a member of the team that won their first Spanish title in May 2000.
He made his international debut in August 1997 against Estonia, making the 2000 European Championship Finals squad.
His first team chances were restricted at Deportivo due to both injury and the rotation system used by the coach and he joined French club Bordeaux in the autumn of 2000.
He has had a golden touch in front of goal and his performances made him the starting striker for the national side.
He has great pace, a good first touch but tends to miss some of the easier chances to come his way.
Pauleta's hat-trick against Poland in Jeonju in 2002 was Portugal's second in the World Cup finals - the other coming in Eusebio's famous four goals against North Korea in 1966.
Pauleta scored the only goal in Portugal's opening game of the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany against Angola.
