One of the most satisfying aspects of Burnley's 2000-01 campaign was Paul's re-emergence after being sidelined for much of the previous two years with a stomach complaint. He began brightly, scoring the winning goal against Wimbledon in the first home league match of the season and he went on to enjoy his best season to date for the Clarets.
Playing on the right, either as a wing back or in a more attacking role, Paul was a tigerish figure whose sheer effort was enough to win a place in the side. Despite being one of the longest-serving players at Turf Moor, he is also one of the youngest in the first-team squad.
He was rewarded for his efforts when he won seven separate 'Player of the Year' awards from the various Clarets' supporters' clubs.
Paul joined Rochdale in September 2004 on non-contract terms.
