Coventry City's 'Mr Dependable' had a good solid season in 2000-01, playing in several positions including central midfield and right back.
Although his place in the team seemed under threat following the arrival of David Thompson, injuries, suspensions, international call-ups and loss of form all meant that Paul was generally in the team or on the bench and when called upon he rarely let the side down.
His doggedness, strong tackling and excellent crossing ability were all characteristics that endeared him to the Sky Blues' fans.
He failed to score during the season but was responsible for setting up many chances with his corners, and delivered two stunning crosses at Manchester United from which John Hartson scored.
Paul had the misfortune to suffer a broken leg in the vital end-of-season game at Aston Villa.
Paul joined Celtic in July 2005 with a two-year contract.
He joined AFC Bournemouth in July 2007 with a one-year contract that was cancelled in December 2007.
Paul joined Leeds United in August 2008 on non-contract terms but was soon extended to a one-year contract.
