A Northern Ireland Under-21 international, Paul finally made his first-team debut for Preston North End in the Worthington Cup tie at Shrewsbury Town in 2000-01, when he looked very comfortable on the ball.

He was later an unused substitute for the FA Cup game against Stockport County.

A promising young central defender, he is effective in the air and times his tackles well.

Paul moved to Lincoln City in the summer but was one of six players placed on the Sincil Bank transfer list in January 2002.

However, by March 2003 his Imps contract was extended to June 2005. He then agreed a new two-year deal.

Paul's contract at Macclesfield Town was extended to June 2012 in January 2011.
