This midfielder developed with Swiss lower division club Vevey Sports before stepping up to join Neuchatel in the 2000 close season.
He appeared regularly in the first team in the opening half of the 2000-01 campaign before switching to Grasshoppers where he has featured in UEFA Cup action.
He moved to Lens on a five-year contract after the African Nations' Cup Final in February 2002, where he has struggled to break into the first team only making five appearances.
One of several European based youngsters introduced to the Senegal team by coach Bruno Metsu, he came on from the subs' bench in the vital World Cup qualifying victory over Morocco.
He scored the first goal of the 2002 finals to clinch the sensational opening match win against holders France, then netted twice in the 3-3 draw with Uruguay to secure Senegal's unexpected place in the last 16 of the World Cup finals.
He joined Fulham in July 2004 with a four-year contract that was extended to June 2009 in April 2006.
His contract at Portsmouth was extended to June 2011 in September 2009.
He joined West Ham United in August 2011 with a one-year contract.
