Viduka is the son of Croatian immigrants.

He learnt to speak their language and grew up with strong awareness of his heritage so assisting his move to Croatia Zagreb.

Having missed the final six weeks of the 1999-2000 season with an ankle injury and then sorted out a new work permit, Viduka eventually signed for Leeds United in the summer in time for the pre-season tour of Sweden, when he duly netted a hat-trick in his first game.

However, he remained without a goal in the first four competitive games of the campaign before departing to join the Australian squad for the Sydney Olympics tournament.

Despite the Olyroos poor showing he returned a different player, and promptly scored on his first game back in the 6-0 thrashing of Besiktas, following this up with doubles in the next two games against Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton Athletic.

His most telling game was against Liverpool when he became the first Leeds striker to score four goals in a league game since Allan Clarke against Burnley in 1971.

In a topsy-turvy game, he had four different types of chances and took them all to give Leeds a 4-3 victory.

Superbly skilful for a big man and full of unselfish running, he complemented those around him brilliantly, particularly Alan Smith.

Viduka had an excellent season, notably in the Champions' League where his combative style gave him the edge opponents.

Viduka joined Middlesbrough in July 2004 with a three-year contract.

He joined Newcastle United in July 2007 in a two-year deal.

The Australian striker was Sam Allardyce's first signing for Newcastle. His influence on Tyneside was restricted, mainly to Achilles tendon and groin injuries, to 40 appearances and culminated in relegation.
