Fish began 2000-01 in fine style at Bolton Wanderers, partnering Gudni Bergsson in the heart of the defence, but in November he elected for a move back into the Premiership when he signed for Charlton Athletic. He was immediately thrust into the side making his debut against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Although primarily a central defender, Fish played several games for the Addicks at right back but wherever he was employed he looked a class act. He is strong in the air, very comfortable on the ground and loves to run with the ball into the opposition half. He built a solid relationship with Richard Rufus at the heart of the Charlton defence and linked up well with his former Bolton colleague Andy Todd when the latter broke into the side at the end of December.
Fish made a number of appearances for South Africa early in the season to become Bolton's most-capped player but announced his retirement from international football shortly afterwards.
Fish's contract at Charlton was extended to June 2005 in May 2004. He retired in December 2005 due to a knee injury.
