A versatile performer who could play at right wing back, defensive or attacking midfielder and as a striker, Mario began his career with his home town team of Zeljecnicar Sarajevo then Dinamo Zagreb before trying his luck abroad at Sporting Gijon. He then had a spell with Benfica before moving to FC Brugge in 1995 where he was voted Belgium's Footballer of the Year. He joined Parma in 1997 and Chelsea invested £5.6 million for his services in July 2000. Unfortunately his progress was halted in only his second Premiership game when he suffered knee ligament damage so requiring surgery and lengthy rehabilitation. Due to on-going problems with his knee injury, Mario announced his retirement in July 2004.
